The main objective of this case study was carry out an in-depth analysis of socio-economic activities of the coastal fisheries in one pilot area. The Praek Thnout Village was selected for the study as it has been identified as having successfully managed their fishery resources while also considered as representative of other communities within the Prek Thnaot Commune of Kampot province.
The study covered 32 households. Information gathered included family size, literacy, education level, occupations, family income and wealth, land holding and ownership. In addition, the survey canvassed information on the village's fisheries and other natural resources management practices.
The socio-economic survey revealed that fishing is an important source of income for the study population. However, more and more people are fishing, which has resulted in crowding of the fishing grounds and reported decreases in living conditions of the local fishers. Examples of good fisheries management practices were found in the study village, which could be replicated in other areas of the coastal zone in Cambodia. A number of problems were however identified, which need to be overcome prior to implementing such management practices nationwide. Several recommendations are given to resolve these problems and enhancing the community resource management practices.
